Dressing appropriately for your professional roles is an important skill that can contribute to our success. You are going to wear something to work. Would you dress for failure on purpose? Probably not. Then why not dress for success?
There are many guidelines for how to dress and present an image to the world. In the 1970s, the books Dress for Success and The Women’s Dress for Success, by John T. Molloy, described how what you wear can make a difference in your business and personal success. Styles have changed since the 1970s, but the principle still applies. This involves not just the clothes you wear but your grooming in general. Your skin is your body’s largest organ. Taken together, your skin, hair, and nails are the body’s most visible evidence of the care it receives.
Dressing for success can be complicated, or it can be simple. Every day, when you look in the mirror before going out, ask yourself: Is this the way a successful professional, whatever your role might be, should look?
Talking to your coach. Observe how people seem to be reacting to your appearance. Observe how other people dress. Once a day or throughout the day tell your coach why you have—or haven’t—dressed for success. Making the journal entry will get you to think about what you and others are wearing. Your coach will ask questions, not expecting an answer, but rather to help you understand how to dress for success, and look like success!
